My Story
Hi, my name is Devin. My family's CNG journey began in Utah with the impending arrival of our baby daughter. After a week long vacation with one of her sisters and her baby, my wife said that our 2-door Ford Escort ZX2 would not do. So, I began looking on the internet for a 4-door vehicle.
We wanted a vehicle that was reliable and got good gas mileage. Our Escort had fit this profile with no major repairs and 40-50 MPG. I've always been a Ford fan, but was not impressed with the lineup on their website. A close friend encouraged me to look at the Honda Civic, so I added it to my list of possibilities. As I looked at www.craigslist.org one day, I noticed an advertisement saying "Drive for $0.73 per gallon!" This obviously perked my interest and I began learning about CNG from that point forward. I test drove a Civic GX and really liked it, but my wife and I decided that we'd either need a second vehicle (in addition to the Civic) or a bi-fuel vehicle to make it to our homes in Washington and Colorado, since there currently is no CNG infrastructure where our families live. Our sights thus narrowed to the bi-fuel Ford Contour and Chevy Cavalier.
I flew out to a GSA auction in Sacramento, CA to bid on a Chevy Cavalier, but conceded the vehicle to someone who wanted it for far more than it was worth at the time. A friend drove me to the airport and as I thought about how I should get home, I checked www.craigslist.org and remembered that I'd seen a Ford Contour in the area. The gentleman drove the Contour with ~40K miles out to the airport, let me test drive it, and filled it with CNG. I really liked the Contour's trunk space compared to the Cavalier. I briefly discussed it with my wife, purchased the car, and drove back to Utah.
